“Here. I saved this for you.” I was floored.
I’d lived on the Navajo reservation for some time. Doorstep newspaper deliveries were not available in our tiny community. TV reception was nonexistent so we didn’t have one. Many years before computers, smart phones, and tablets, my only option for news was a newspaper from the 7-11 store in a town 25 miles away. Since I worked in that town five days a week, my first priority for each week-day morning was to snag one.
That wasn’t always easy, as many others were doing the same thing. Some days there just weren’t any left by the time I arrived.
The same woman was behind the counter nearly every day and, though I smiled and said “Good morning” regularly, she never reciprocated. I thought she must not care for me much.
One morning I was particularly avid to get one, as national elections had taken place the day before; I wanted to know what had happened around the country. I entered the store at a trot, and noticed immediately that the countertop, where they usually lay, was empty. All gone.
I must have made a sound of dismay because the woman looked up just as I was turning to head back out.
“Here. I saved this for you,” she said, and pulled a paper from beneath the counter.
I was flabbergasted. And very grateful.
We don’t know who’s watching. We don’t know what people think of us, what they’ve noticed, their perceptions for good or ill.
But that others are watching and do have an opinion we can be sure. This is true in general and will certainly be true of our guests for the meetings coming up. We are Jesus’ representatives and should strive to reflect Him appropriately and accurately and appealingly at all times.
My Navajo friend, whose name I never learned, from whom I never did get a smile, knew who I was and what I came into her store for every day. Our guests will be entering our church to gain knowledge and meet Jesus.
Let’s make sure that happens.
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”
1 Peter 2:9
